Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, Governor Henry G. Blasdel signed “An Act for the Erection of a State Capitol” on February 23, 1869; and

WHEREAS, Nevada’s first and only State Capitol building in Carson City was completed in May 1871, 150 years ago; and

WHEREAS, Carson City founder, Abraham Curry set aside the building site and whose sandstone quarry provided the exterior building blocks; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada State Capitol was designed by San Francisco architect Joseph Gosling, formerly a Virginia City carpenter, and whose neo-classical architectural design includes the silver-colored cupola dome which is emblematic of the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, the State Capitol building construction occurred in the years 1870 and 1871 by Peter Cavanaugh & Son of Carson City; and

WHEREAS, the Capitol housed all three branches of government for more than 50 years before the Supreme Court moved out in 1937 and the Legislature in 1971, and the constitutional officers, including every Nevada Governor, except the first, continue to perform their duties from the State Capitol building; and

WHEREAS, the Capitol’s early expansion of its legislative chambers to accommodate a growing State was overseen by Reno architect, Frederic DeLongchamps; and

WHEREAS, the Capitol underwent a major seismic retrofit in the 1970s that added a structural inner shell to the original sandstone walls, followed by painstaking restoration of the interior architecture; and

WHEREAS, to this day, the Nevada State Capitol is open to visitors allowing them to experience its historic halls, original Supreme Court and Legislative Chambers and is a cherished monument that is beloved by all who call the Silver State home;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the day of June 5, 2021, as
