Today, Governor Steve Sisolak announced the appointment of Jhone Ebert as the new superintendent of public instruction for the Nevada Department of Education, effective April 2nd. Ebert replaces previous superintendent Dr. Steve Canavero, who resigned February 6th. Dr. Jonathan Moore has served as acting superintendent since February 7th and will return to his previous position as deputy superintendent of student achievement.
“I am thrilled to appoint Jhone Ebert as Nevada’s next superintendent of public instruction,” Governor Sisolak said. “Jhone is a life-long educator and change leader with extensive experience both in the classroom and in administrative roles, including 25 years in Nevada schools. I have no doubt that she is the best person to get our schools back on track and set Nevada students up for success in K-12 and beyond.
“I want to thank Dr. Moore for stepping up to lead the Department during the transition period, and for his continued service to our state in his role as deputy superintendent,” Governor Sisolak continued. “I also want to thank the Board of Education for their thoughtful leadership throughout this transition, search, and selection process.”

Ebert is a life-long educator with executive-level expertise in state and district education administration and decades of experience working with diverse students, geographies, and educational delivery models. Since 2015, she has served as the senior deputy commissioner for P-20 education policy at the New York State Education Department. In this role, Ebert is the senior education policy advisor to the state commissioner and Board of Regents, leading policymaking and programs affecting teaching and learning from early childhood through postsecondary education, or P-20. During her tenure, graduation rates in New York have increased and achievement gaps have narrowed. Previously, Ebert served in the Clark County School District (CCSD) for 25 years, most recently as chief innovation and productivity officer and chief technology officer. Ebert has served in a variety of leadership roles within CCSD and began her education career as a mathematics teacher in Las Vegas.
Ebert is the recipient of numerous professional honors and awards, including the National School Boards Association’s Technology Leadership Network 20 to Watch, CCSD Excellence in Education Hall of Fame Award, Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, and the Fulbright-Hayes Program scholarship. Ebert received her Master of Education in instructional and curricular studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from California State University Fresno.
