Today, Governor Steve Sisolak announced that Dr. Jonathan Moore will serve as acting superintendent of public instruction for the Nevada Department of Education beginning tomorrow, February 7th. Dr. Steve Canavero’s last day as superintendent is today.
“I want to sincerely thank Dr. Canavero for his service to our state and Nevada’s students, and I want to thank the employees of the Department of Education who continue to work tirelessly on behalf of Nevada’s students and educators to move Nevada’s education system forward,” Governor Sisolak said. “I am thrilled that Dr. Moore has accepted the role of acting superintendent, and I know that he will lead the Department faithfully during this time of transition. In the coming weeks, I look forward to working with the State Board of Education on the appointment process for a new superintendent.”
Dr. Moore has served as the deputy superintendent of student achievement at the Department of Education since November 2018. He oversees the offices of Assessment, Data, and Accountability Management; Career Readiness, Adult Learning and Education Options; Early Learning and Development; Special Education; Standards and Instructional Support; and Student and School Support. Dr. Moore previously served as the deputy associate superintendent of K-12 academic standards at the Arizona Department of Education and as the principal of a K-8 school in South Phoenix, AZ.
