WHEREAS, the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection report cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and age 15. This tragic disease is detected in more than 16,000 of our country's young people every year, while an estimated 400,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed globally with cancer each year; and
WHEREAS, one in five of our nation's children loses his or her battle with cancer. Many infants, children and teens will suffer from long-term effects of comprehensive treatment, including secondary cancers; and
WHEREAS, two-thirds of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health conditions as a result of their treatment toxicity, with one quarter being classified as severe to life-threatening and approximately one half of childhood cancer families rate the associated financial toxicity due to out-of-pocket expenses as considerable to severe; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection provide a variety of vital patient psychosocial services to children undergoing cancer treatment at Sunrise Children's Hospital, Children's Medical Center at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, UMC Children's Hospital of Nevada, Children's Specialty Center of Nevada in Las Vegas, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas, as well as participating hospitals throughout the country, thereby enhancing the quality of life for these children and their families; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection also sponsor toy distributions, sailing programs, Laughternoon - Laughter is Healing, positive appearance programs, pet-assisted therapy, KCC Supercar Experience, Home and Hospital Instructional programs and hospital celebrations in honor of a child's determination and bravery to fight the battle against childhood cancer;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2024 as
CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
