WHEREAS, lung cancer impacts Nevadans across the state and an increase in screenings and awareness of risk factors can help lower the number of cases and improve outcomes for those diagnosed; and
WHEREAS, in Nevada in 2020, the latest year for which incidence data are available, there were 1,692 lung and bronchus cancer cases reported while 1,240 died from this cancer; and
WHEREAS, the only recommended screening test for lung cancer is low-dose computed tomography (also called a low-dose CT scan, or LDCT); and
WHEREAS, Nevada's rate for those who have received an LDCT is at 1 percent; and
WHEREAS, smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke are the leading risk factors associated with lung cancer; but many additional cases are linked to exposure to radon, asbestos, chemicals, and other airborne pollutants and early screenings for those diagnosed can help with treatment options and success; and
WHEREAS, African Americans have the highest lung cancer incidence and mortality of all races, and disparities in lung cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and mortality are well characterized among African Americans and other racial
WHEREAS, agencies and individuals across Nevada are working together to increase awareness, provide education, encourage prevention, and promote accessible health care to reduce the prevalence and manage lung and bronchus cancer throughout the state;
