WHEREAS, the earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced to the spring celebration of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods; and

WHEREAS, during the 1600's, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday, and during this time many of the poor lived with and worked as servants for the wealthy having only “Mothering Sunday” off to return home and spend the day with their mothers; and

WHEREAS, in the United States, Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julian Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace; and

WHEREAS, in 1907 Ana Jarvis, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day; and

WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement in 1941, proclaiming the second Sunday of May as a national holiday; and

WHEREAS, we encourage all state offices, schools, homes, lodges, churches and places of business to display the United States flag in honor of the dedicated and loving mothers throughout the Silver State;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim Sunday May 14, 2023 as

MOTHER’S DAY IN NEVADA
