DECLARATION OF EMERGENCY
Proclamation Declaring a Severe Weather Emergency
WHEREAS, Hurricane Hilary has made landfall as a tropical storm in the southwest region of North America; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the tropical storm, weather forecasts predict severe weather systems to impact southern Nevada, exceeding the expected annual rainfall for the region in a short period of time and resulting in extreme flooding events for some areas; and
WHEREAS, several counties in southern Nevada are likely to be impacted by flash flooding, rockslides, and mudslides; and
WHEREAS, Clark and Nye counties have declared states of emergency due to flooding and are seeking assistance from the State of Nevada in their response and recovery; and
WHEREAS, significant damage to public and private property are likely, including multiple transp01tat · on routes; and
WHEREAS, the State of Nevada will likely require assistance from the Federal Highway Administration on eligible roads and projects, which will be identified when damage assessment is completed; and
WHEREAS, the severe weather systems are continuing to make their way up the entire state and additional declarations from counties and tribes are possible in the coming days; and
WHEREAS, in order to protect residents and visitors, communities, and critical infrastructure, the State of Nevada will coordinate its emergency response with federal, state, local, and tribal entities; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Joe Lombardo, Governor of the State of Nevada, pursuant to the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Nevada, hereby declare a state of emergency to include the following direction:
- All state agencies shall work through the Nevada Operations Center to support local entities in need.
- The Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security shall work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to support local governments.
- The Nevada Department of Transportation shall formally request assistance through the Federal Highway Administration's Emergency Relief Program, United States Code, Title 23, Section 125, in order to obtain federal assistance for highway repairs or reconstruction.
