WHEREAS, Overdose Awareness Day is observed annually on August 31st, and serves as a day to stand alongside survivors, their families, friends and communities, while helping to raise awareness and increase education that overdose-related death is preventable; and

WHEREAS, in addition to serving as a day of remembrance, Overdose Awareness Day is an opportunity to educate our communities and reduce the stigma of addiction and drug-related death, and to encourage those struggling with addition to reach out for help; and

WHEREAS, most recent data reveals that there were 832 overdose deaths in Nevada and approximately 109,179 deaths in the United States; and

WHEREAS, help is available and there is support for those who are ready to work toward a physically and emotionally healthy lifestyle; and

WHEREAS, in Nevada Naloxone can be obtained free of charge and without a prescription; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada has worked to empower their community in the fight against overdose death, including opioid overdose, by providing resources and support, while expanding the availability of the life-saving drug Naloxone to ensure that anyone can obtain the medication through pharmacies and community organizations; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada joins organizations around the world in the fight for Nevada's families and the future of our state and nation as we work to end addiction and overdose;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim August 31, 2023 as

OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY IN NEVADA
