WHEREAS, April 6 has significance for all Americans of Scottish descent, because the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320, and the American Declaration of Independence was modeled on that inspirational document; and

WHEREAS, nearly half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as the governors of 9 of the original 13 states, were of Scottish ancestry, and Scottish Americans have played a critical role in the founding and success of our nation; and

WHEREAS, we wish to recognize the monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish Americans that have led to America’s preeminence in the fields of science, technology, medicine, government, politics, economics, architecture, literature, media and visual and performing arts; and

WHEREAS, we wish to commend organizations throughout Nevada that honor Scottish heritage, traditions and culture, and express our appreciation for the wonderful and rich contributions that have been made to our state by those of Scottish heritage; and

WHEREAS, Tartan Day has become recognized internationally with five countries currently participating in its celebration with the Scottish-American community in Nevada proudly wearing their tartans in celebration;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2023 as

TARTAN DAY IN NEVADA
