WHEREAS, concerned organizations across Nevada are taking a stand against sexual assault and are dedicated to sexual assault prevention and education efforts to change societal beliefs and behaviors that condone and bolster the perpetuation of sexual assault; and
WHEREAS, sexual violence is a dangerous form of abuse rooted in control which crosses all economic, educational, racial, affectional, and societal barriers; and requires all Nevadans to take action to reduce harm; and
WHEREAS, the experience of sexual violence violates an individual's privacy, dignity, security, and humanity; and a victim is never to blame for their assault, regardless of the circumstances; and
WHEREAS, sexual violence remains one of the most prevalent yet underreported crimes in Nevada and the United States, leaving perpetrators free to harm others, and victim-survivors reeling in the wake of its toll, largely due to stigma, a lack of understanding and victim-blaming; and
WHEREAS, programs serving victim-survivors in Nevada are honored and celebrated for their tireless efforts during the 22nd anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2023 as
SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
