Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, The Nevada Commission on Mentoring was first created during the 2017 Legislative Session by the late Nevada State Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson to support and facilitate youth mentorship programs in the State of Nevada and to work in consultation with the Nevada Department of Education to provide direction and guidance for mentoring organizations; and

WHEREAS, mentoring in Nevada is a time-proven approach utilizing structured, trusting, and sustainable relationships that pair adult mentors and youth mentees together, who, along with parents and caregivers offer guidance, support, counsel, encouragement, and constructive examples aimed at developing the competence, character, and potential of the mentee; and

WHEREAS, mentoring has tangible effects; with a mentor young people are less likely to skip school, more likely to volunteer regularly, and more likely to hold a leadership position in a club or on a sports team; and

WHEREAS, research suggests that mentoring relationships are powerful tools to develop human connections and are critical for the success of our country’s future; and

WHEREAS, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been an especially challenging time for Nevada's children as they were often isolated from friends and trusted adults and relied on remote learning platforms to access their education, and oftentimes their extracurricular activities were postponed or cancelled; and

WHEREAS, across Nevada approximately 1 in 3 young people are growing up without a mentor outside their family; by expanding mentoring opportunities we can close the mentoring gap and increase access to positive adult role models for youngsters; and

WHEREAS, mentoring organizations across the Silver State have been instrumental in continuing to serve Nevada's children by promoting academic success, engagement in extracurriculars, and connections to new opportunities; and

WHEREAS, Thank a Mentor Day in Nevada is a time to raise awareness about the positive outcomes of mentoring relationships and to celebrate and to share our gratitude for mentors and the positive effects that they have on young people;
