Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is observing May as Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month to educate the public about this rare genetic disorder that is diagnosed in approximately 1 out of every 3,000 live births; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 100,000 Americans have a neurofibromatosis disorder, yet it remains a relatively unknown disorder to the public; and

WHEREAS, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, neurofibromatosis affects all populations equally; and

WHEREAS, neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and can also affect development of the brain, cardiovascular system, bones and skin and it can lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer; and

WHEREAS, neurofibromatosis organizations are actively fostering collaborative partnerships in both science and industry to expedite the drug research and development process and by promoting and sponsoring world-class medical research aimed at finding effective treatments for neurofibromatosis and, ultimately a cure for the disorder; and

WHEREAS, national organizations are striving to improve access to quality patient healthcare through neurofibromatosis clinics and networks. Groups in the Silver State are working to provide patient and family support for those affected by neurofibromatosis by providing access to informational resources, youth programs, and local chapter activities; and

WHEREAS, I am proud to join the neurofibromatosis community in the Silver State in raising public awareness, helping to promote early diagnosis, prevention of complications, proper management and treatment, and supporting research around this disorder;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2022, as

NEUROFIBROMATOSIS AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
