WHEREAS, On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday; and

WHEREAS, in 1966, United States President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day; and

WHEREAS, six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972; and

WHEREAS, ever since then, Father’s Day has been a holiday that is dedicated to honoring extraordinary men who work and sacrifice all year, inspire us to achieve greatness, and support us regardless of the challenges we face or the paths we choose; and

WHEREAS, on Father’s Day in Nevada, residents are encouraged to share a public expression of love and reverence for all fathers including stepfathers, grandfathers, godfathers, foster fathers and so many more; and

WHEREAS, we encourage all State offices, schools, homes, lodges, churches, and places of business to celebrate and recognize the dedicated and loving fathers throughout Nevada and share our sincere appreciation for the important role they play in our lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim June 19, 2022, as

FATHER’S DAY IN NEVADA
