Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, Agriculture Day is celebrated to honor the contribution to our State by the industrious Nevadans along the food and agriculture supply chain; and

WHEREAS, recognizing Agriculture Day provides the opportunity for all Nevadans to appreciate Nevada food and agriculture's breadth and beauty, and how food, fiber and fuel products are produced, as well as the role Nevada farmers and ranchers play in providing safe, abundant and affordable products, despite drought, adverse weather, pests and disease; and

WHEREAS, Nevada's food and agriculture sector led the way to ensure a stable food supply in the face of challenges prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and helped to meet community needs by selling food directly to consumers and implementing new models such as curbside pickup and online sales; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Department of Agriculture connected local producers with the public and food banks to make food available for the increased need seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, and pivoted existing resources and deliveries to ensure tribal communities, seniors, children, and food insecure populations continued to receive food in a safe manner with no interruptions; and

WHEREAS, the collective efforts of the private sector, State and federal programs, and partners help to get food to those facing food insecurity, playing an integral role in making sure Nevada families had enough food on the table; and

WHEREAS, the distinction of Nevada agriculture is built on a solid history of good stewardship of the land and sustainable agricultural practices focused on preservation and innovation for the health of our planet; and

WHEREAS, 3,350 farms and ranches cover more than 6 million acres across the Silver State, both urban and rural; and

WHEREAS, livestock and the production of hay (alfalfa and grass), allium crops (onions and garlic), potatoes, corn, wheat, oats, barley, melons, other vegetable crops, small fruits, honey and hemp contribute to the State's economy; and

WHEREAS, Nevada's food, beverage and specialty product manufactures make up a significant segment of agricultural economic impact for the State with an economic output of $4.3 billion in 2020; and

WHEREAS, food and agriculture are one of Nevada's most vital industry sectors, employing more than 18,000 Nevadans, contributing $5.2 billion to the State's economy in 2020; and

WHEREAS, on Agriculture Day in Nevada the food and agriculture sector of Nevada are recognized for providing employment, healthy and safe food for our communities, and conscientious stewardship of the land for future generations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim March 22, 2022, as

AGRICULTURE DAY IN NEVADA
