
WHEREAS, riding on school buses maximizes the likelihood that
Nevada’s students will arrive at school safely, on time and ready to learn; and
WHEREAS, school buses safely deliver more than 25 million students to school each day and the use of school buses reduces traffic by keeping over 17 million cars off roads nationally each year; and
WHEREAS, school buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road and are designed so that they are highly visible and include safety features ranging from flashing lights to high crush standards and rollover protection; and
WHEREAS, in Nevada, school bus drivers report an average of 1,700 vehicles failing to stop for school buses when loading and unloading students and nationally it is estimated that over 10 million drivers illegally pass school buses every year; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme for School Bus Safety Awareness Week is, “Be Safe - Know the Danger Zone” to educate both students and the public about the areas around a school bus where students are most likely to be injured while loading and unloading; and
WHEREAS, Nevadans play an integral role in ensuring the safety of our students while they are traveling on a school bus to and from school;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of October 18 - 22, 2021, as
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK IN NEVADA
