
WHEREAS, journalism is an essential public service in successful democracies and the State of Nevada, founded on democratic principles, has benefited greatly from public service journalism; and
WHEREAS, the production of local journalism in Nevada has been diminished and altered by sweeping social, political, economic and technological forces; and
WHEREAS, this disruption in the production of local journalism has enabled misinformation and disinformation to circulate and proliferate; and
WHEREAS, strengthening anew local public service journalism can foster knowledge, engagement, trust and empathy within a community; and
WHEREAS, supporting essential local journalism relies on the knowledge and engagement of local leaders and individual citizens and residents; and
WHEREAS, robust local news systems flourish only when individuals and communities commit to social, legal, and economic support for a free press;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim October 19, 2021, as
LOCAL JOURNALISM DAY IN NEVADA
