WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Nevada stand firmly committed to quality afterschool programs and opportunities; and

WHEREAS, afterschool programs provide safe, challenging, and engaging learning experiences that help children develop social, emotional, physical and academic skills; and

WHEREAS, these programs support working families by ensuring children are safe and productive when they are out of their classrooms; and

WHEREAS, afterschool programs help to build stronger communities by involving students, parents, business leaders and volunteers in the lives of young people, thereby promoting positive relationships among youth, families and adults; and

WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, afterschool programs have risen to the occasion to support our youth by providing virtual programming to keep kids engaged, caring for children of essential workers, providing meals and learning supports, and checking in on the wellbeing of youth and their families; and

WHEREAS, Lights on Afterschool, the national celebration of afterschool programs, promotes the importance of quality afterschool programs in the lives of children, families and communities; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to investing in the health and safety of all young people by providing learning opportunities that will help close the achievement gap and prepare students to compete in the global economy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim October 22, 2020 as

LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL DAY IN NEVADA
