WHEREAS, the national 2020 Fire Prevention Week theme 'Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!', reminds all Nevadans to stay alert and use caution when cooking to reduce the risk of kitchen fires; and 

WHEREAS, house fires in the United States resulted in 2,630 civilian deaths, and fire departments responded to 357,000 home fires in 2017, according to the National Fire Protection Association; and 

WHEREAS, cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the United States, with fire departments responding to more than 173,200 calls annually between 2013 and 2017; and

WHEREAS, working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a reported home fire by 50 percent and two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen, with 31 percent of these fires resulting from unattended cooking; and

WHEREAS, Nevada's first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of October 4-10, 2020 as

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK IN NEV ADA
