WHEREAS, domestic violence violates an individual’s privacy, dignity, security, and humanity due to the use of physical, emotional, sexual and psychological abuse, and economic control; and

WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first observed in October 1987, and during this same year the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline was launched; and

WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence directly affects our society across all economic, racial, and societal barriers, and prevention is essential to ending this harmful cycle; and

WHEREAS, according to the 2016 Nevada State Police’s Incident Crime Report, approximately 28,000 domestic violence offenses were reported to Nevada law enforcement and 10,261 children were present to witness these incidents; and

WHEREAS, victims of domestic violence exhibit tremendous courage and resilience, but still face significant barriers escaping their perpetrator; and

WHEREAS, advocacy networks across Nevada have worked and will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of victims, and they remain dedicated to providing a voice for victims and families, while increasing awareness across the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, October is a time to remember and honor all victims, as well as raise awareness to help prevent domestic violence;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim October 2020 as

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
