WHEREAS, breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast, and according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers, and it is estimated that in 2020, approximately 30 percent of all new women cancer diagnoses will be breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, in Nevada from 2013-2017, there were 9,593 female breast cancer incidences reported, and the rate for female breast cancer per 100,000 women in Nevada is 117.1, according to the Nevada Central Cancer Registry; and

WHEREAS, monthly breast self-exams and mammograms are the best available methods for detecting breast changes that may be cancerous, and it is important to consult with a healthcare professional if any changes are detected during self-evaluations; and

WHEREAS, symptoms of breast cancer may include any changes in the size or shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, or a new lump in the breast or underarm; and

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the symptoms of this disease and the importance of early detection and treatment

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim October 2020 as

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
