Governor Sisolak announces new Patient Protection Commission Executive Director

CARSON CITY, NV - March 28, 2022

Today, Governor Steve Sisolak is proud to announce the appointment of Malinda Southard, DC, CPM, as Executive Director of the Patient Protection Commission.

Dr. Southard most recently served as the Section Manager of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Public Health Preparedness Program. In this role, she provided strategic oversight and support to the State’s COVID-19 response while working closely with federal partners, state and local agencies, and Nevada’s health care sector.

Dr. Southard worked as a chiropractic physician in Carson City for 5 years before beginning her state service. She received her Doctor of Chiropractic from University of Western States.

“I am proud that Dr. Southard has accepted the position to lead our Patient Protection Commission,” said Governor Sisolak. “Throughout the pandemic she has worked diligently to support our state and I am confident she will bring her strong work ethic, leadership skills and understanding of the diverse needs of Nevadans to this position. I look forward to what the PPC will accomplish in its next chapter.”

The PPC was created through legislation introduced by the Governor in 2019, and in 2021 the Commission was moved to the Department of Health and Human Services to better support patients and connect more closely with the data and resources of DHHS.

“I am excited and honored for the opportunity to bring my background in public health and commitment to patient care to this position,” said Dr. Southard. “The PPC has begun valuable work to support Nevadans and I know that together we can work to improve health care access and address critical issues for the good of all patients.”

The Governor appoints the Commission’s Executive Director and 12 voting members. Dr. Southard will begin her new position on April 4.
