EXECUTIVE ORDER 2020-17

ORDERING FLAGS TO HALF STAFF

WHEREAS, Ronald E. Smith served our country in the United States Navy; and

WHEREAS, after so serving his country, Ronald E. Smith dedicated himself to serving his community; and

WHEREAS, Ronald E. Smith served as a City Councilmember of the City of Sparks from 2006 to 2018, when he was elected Mayor of the City of Sparks; and

WHEREAS, Ronald E. Smith was instrumental in seeing to fruition key infrastructure projects in the City of Sparks and northern Nevada, including the Southeast Connector and flood improvements that alleviated flooding in the region; and

WHEREAS, Ronald E. Smith served as the President of Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza, a project to honor all Nevadans who have died in service to the United States; and

WHEREAS, after a lifetime of service to others, Ronald E. Smith succumbed to cancer on August 19, 2020; and

WHEREAS, memorial services for Ronald E. Smith will be held September 12, 2020 at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sparks, NV; and

WHEREAS, Article 5, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides: “The supreme executive power of this State, shall be vested in a Chief Magistrate who shall be Governor of the State of Nevada;” and

NOW, THEREFORE by the authority vested in me as Governor by the Constitution and the laws of the State of Nevada and the United States, it is hereby ordered that:

The flags of the United States and the State of Nevada shall be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and all State public buildings and grounds, from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, September 12, 2020, as a mark of respect and in remembrance of Mayor Ron Smith.
