
WHEREAS, Mike McGinness was a fourth generation Nevadan born in Fallon, Nevada to Joseph William and Helen Marie McGinness where he lived for his entire adult life; and
WHEREAS, Mike graduated from Churchill County High School and the University of Nevada where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and was enlisted in the Nevada Air National Guard from 1969 to 1973; and
WHEREAS, Mike worked for the family business KVLV-AM and FM, until retirement, as an on-air talent, station manager, and sports announcer for Fallon Greenwave sports. He was inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Mike spent 24 years in the Nevada Legislature, starting as an Assemblyman from 1988 to 1992 and then as a Senator from 1992 until 2012. He chaired several crucial committees, including the Legislative Committee on Public Lands and the Committee on High-Level Radioactive Waste. He also served as Chairman of the Senate Taxation Committee and was elected by his colleagues to serve as Minority Leader from 2011 to 2012; and
WHEREAS, Mike was inducted into the Nevada Senate Hall of Fame in 2017 for his distinguished service, the respect he earned from colleagues, and for reaching across the aisle during his years in the Senate; he was a tireless advocate for his constituents; and
WHEREAS, Mike was heavily involved with the community he loved. He served as a Commissioner on the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline, as president of the Fallon Kiwanis Club and the Fallon Ducks Unlimited, past president of the Nevada State Fair Board of Directors, past chairman of the Churchill County Parks and Recreation Commission, past chairman of the Churchill County School Board, and past chairman of the Churchill County Republican Central Committee. He also served on the Churchill Arts Advisory Committee, the Churchill Millennium Committee, and was selected as the 1986 Citizen of the Year by the Fallon Board of Realtors and the 1987 Citizen of the Year by the Nevada Association of Realtors; and
WHEREAS, Mike is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deanna, his children Ryan, Brett, and Shannon, and his 6 grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, the thoughts and prayers of all Nevadans are with his family, friends, and loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Article 5, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides: “The supreme executive power of this State, shall be vested in a Chief Magistrate who shall be Governor of the State of Nevada.”
NOW, THEREFORE, by the authority vested in me as Governor by the Constitution and laws of the State of Nevada and the United States, it is hereby ordered as follows:
- The flags of the United States and the State of Nevada shall be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and all State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Sunday, February 16th, 2025, to honor Senator Mike McGinness.
