WHEREAS, In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The following year, the U.S. Congress followed suit passing a resolution establishing a national celebration; and

WHEREAS, every year since 1987, the United States has formally recognized March as National Women’s History Month; and

WHEREAS, the 2022 Women’s History theme is, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,” as both an awareness of the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history; and

WHEREAS, Nevada women have influenced and advanced every facet of American life and culture and the strength, resourcefulness, and spirit of our female leaders, innovators, and pioneers shape our State’s government, businesses, communities, and families; and

WHEREAS, Women’s History Month in Nevada is a celebration of the women of every race, class, and ethnic background who have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of the Silver State in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and

WHEREAS, notable Nevadans include, “Copper Queen” Ferminia Sarras who blazed a path for women in mining via her numerous copper, gold and silver claims, such that she was the namesake of the town of Mina, and Sarann Knight-Preddy, pathbreaking as the first African-American woman to hold a gaming license for The Lincoln Bar in Hawthorne and later, as owner of the Moulin Rouge, and including the present-day women of the Nevada Legislature who represent 60% of that body, a first in the nation’s history; and

WHEREAS, during Women’s History Month in Nevada we honor the women who have contributed to our State, and we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the next generation of female trailblazers and leaders as they carry forward this distinguished legacy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2022, as

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH IN NEVADA
