
WHEREAS, The United States Congress and President have designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week surrounding it as Police Week; and
WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers currently serving in communities across the United States, including 11,000 active law enforcement officers in the Silver State; and
WHEREAS, currently, the Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial has 144 names of fallen officers dating back to 1861; and
WHEREAS, it is critical that all residents understand their law enforcement agencies' duties, responsibilities, risks, and sacrifices, and that members of our law enforcement agencies recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, protecting them from violence and disorder, and protecting the innocent from deception and the weak from oppression; and
WHEREAS, the men and women of law enforcement across the Silver State provide an unending public service and we appreciate the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices made daily by officers and their family members to protect us in our schools, workplaces, roadways, and homes; and
WHEREAS, we honor and remember all law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, as well as the loved ones they left behind; and
WHEREAS, we recognize and thank all law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line day in and day out to keep Nevada and our communities safe; and
WHEREAS, the State of Nevada calls upon residents to join in commemorating law enforcement officers, past and present, who have established for themselves the rights and security of all citizens through their faithful and loyal devotion to their communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of May 15 - 21, 2022, as
NATIONAL POLICE WEEK IN NEVADA
