
WHEREAS, the second week of May has been designated as Lung Cancer Awareness Week in Nevada; and
WHEREAS, about every two and a half minutes, a person in the U.S. is diagnosed with lung cancer; and
WHEREAS, in the Silver State, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for both women and men; and
WHEREAS, in Nevada, an estimated 2,303 new cases of lung and bronchus cancer are detected each year and it is projected that approximately 1,170 deaths will be a result of lung and bronchus cancer in 2022; and
WHEREAS, lung cancer screening saves lives, and advocacy and increased awareness will result in more high-risk individuals getting screened; and
WHEREAS, public support for research funding will result in new treatments and better methods of early detection; and
WHEREAS, national initiatives led by the American Lung Association and community efforts in the Silver State are underway to provide information, resources, support to individual affected by lung cancer; and
WHEREAS, the nation and the State of Nevada recognizes the work of organizations promoting awareness to fight lung cancer, thereby improving screening rates, early detection, treatment and advancing research toward finding a cure to defeat lung cancer;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of May 8 -14, 2022, as
LUNG CANCER AWARENESS WEEK IN NEVADA
