WHEREAS, Falls are prevalent and limit functional independence for many older adults every year. This risk has increased with social isolation and decreased physical activity due to COVID -19; and

WHEREAS, over 28% of Nevada's older adults fall each year; and

WHEREAS, of those older adults that fall, more than 20% sustain severe injury requiring medical care and/or limiting independent mobility; and

WHEREAS, a growing number of adults fear falling, causing them to limit their activities and social engagements, which can lead to depression, loss of mobility, and loss of functional independence; and

WHEREAS, the majority of these injuries CAN be avoided by participating in well-chosen evidence-based fall prevention programs in the community and/or virtually at home; and

WHEREAS, evidence-based programs reduce falls by utilizing cost-effective strategies, such as exercise programs to improve balance and strength, medication management, vision improvement, reduction of home hazards, and fall prevention education; and

WHEREAS, we join organizations across the state in raising awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults, collaborate and educate Nevadans about the impact of falls, and encourage citizens across the state to take steps to protect those who are at increased risk of falling;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of September 19 - 23, 2022,
