
WHEREAS, Katherine “Kat” Miller is a daughter of the Silver State, a native Nevadan, who was raised in Reno and Virginia City; and
WHEREAS, Kat joined the U.S. Army as an enlisted soldier, who’s tremendous talent and fierce dedication helped her rise through the ranks to become an officer and retire with the rank of Colonel after 34 years of service; and
WHEREAS, Kat honorably served in the U.S. and overseas during her military career which culminated with an assignment as a military police brigade commander, including overseeing the Department of Defense’s largest correctional organization; and
WHEREAS, Kat is to be commended for her outstanding career and service with the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, joining the department in April 2012 as a Deputy Director, becoming Director in August 2013, serving 10 years; and
WHEREAS, under her watch as Director, the number of claims filed on behalf of Nevada veterans increased significantly by more than 15% each year, resulting in more than $230 million dollars for Nevada’s veterans in just 2021 alone; and
WHEREAS, also under her watch as Director, the department oversaw the design, construction, and dedication of the new Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks; as well as the construction and dedication of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial and the Battle Born Memorial; along with the expansion of all department programs aimed at supporting veterans, military members, and their families too numerous to mention; and
WHEREAS, Kat embodies the spirit of an American hero and is a true public servant whose selfless sacrifice has made a difference and improved the quality of life for many Nevada veterans, military members, and their families; and
WHEREAS, I urge all citizens of the Silver State to express their sincerest appreciation for Katherine “Kat” Miller’s dedication and service to Nevada’s veterans and we wish her many continued years of happiness and good health;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim April 30, 2022, as a day in honor of
