
WHEREAS, Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal or 5th cranial nerve and is characterized by recurrent shock-like or burning facial pain; and
WHEREAS, individuals suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia may experience severe facial pain that can last from seconds to several minutes to constant, with some individuals having 100 lightning-like busts of stabbing facial pain in a day; and
WHEREAS, Trigeminal Neuralgia can occur at any age, but most often in people over 50 years old and it occurs more frequently in women than in men; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 1 in 15,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, although the number may be higher due to misdiagnoses; and
WHEREAS, Trigeminal Neuralgia is known to be one of the most painful conditions known to man, with very few treatment options; and
WHEREAS, the treatment options for Trigeminal Neuralgia include the use of medicines, surgical treatments and neurosurgical procedures along with complementary techniques which may include acupuncture, biofeedback, vitamin therapy, nutritional therapy, and electrical stimulation of the nerves; and
WHEREAS, in the Silver State, Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day is proclaimed to recognize those diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia and their family and friends. It is a day to join together to educate others about the symptoms and the challenges that they face, to raise awareness of the condition and to advocate for research and support organizations;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim October 7, 2021, as
TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA AWARENESS DAY IN NEVADA
