Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada honors October as Spina Bifida Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, Spina bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect that is associated with life and approximately 166,000 people in the United States are living with this condition; and

WHEREAS, Spina bifida literally means, "split spine,” typically occurring within the first 28 days of pregnancy, while the neural tube is forming, Spina bifida often occurs before a woman even knows she is pregnant; and

WHEREAS, Spina bifida is commonly referred to as the "snowflake condition" of birth defects because no two cases are the same. Cases of Spina bifida can range from mild to severe; the severity depends on everything from the size of the opening to the location on the spine; and

WHEREAS, with assistance from various organizations, heath care professionals and family members, individuals born with Spina bifida can lead full lives in the State of Nevada by engaging in educational opportunities, enjoying sports and participating in other enjoyable activities,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2021, as

SPINA BIFIDA AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
