
WHEREAS, Sickle Cell Disease is more than 3 times as common as other genetic disorders in the United States; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 100,000 people live with Sickle Cell Disease in the United States and people of African ancestry make up 90% of the population with Sickle Cell Disease, but many different races are affected; and
WHEREAS, Sickle Cell Disease occurs in 1 out of every 365 African American births; and
WHEREAS, about 1 in 13 African Americans is born with sickle cell trait; and
WHEREAS, Sickle Cell Disease has the potential for a widespread impact on the body and mind, and overall health of a person living with the disease; and
WHEREAS, the average life expectancy of a person with Sickle Cell Disease is approximately 48 years and currently there is no universal cure for Sickle Cell Disease; and
WHEREAS, the State of Nevada has made sickle cell awareness, access to care and equity in the treatment of patients with Sickle Cell Disease a priority;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2021, as
SICKLE CELL DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
