Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, four major Indigenous groups; the Northern Paiute, the Shoshone, the Southern Paiute, and the Washoe are the original caretakers of the land we now call Nevada; and

WHEREAS, despite systemic failures and challenges, these Indigenous groups comprised of 27 federally recognized Tribal Nations, Bands and Colonies, in addition to over 50,000 Urban Indians. These diverse Indigenous groups contribute to the fine arts, business enterprises, sports, science, and cultural preservation throughout the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is strengthened by the resiliency of these Native American communities’ historic contributions in areas such as volunteer military service, traditional ecological knowledge and stewardship, and language revitalization for which the Numa, the Newe, the Nuwuvi, and the Wa She Shu incorporate into their everyday existence; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Legislature reaffirmed its commitment to the first people of the Great Basin by removing financial barriers to higher education by instituting fee waivers for all Native American learners from our State and passing critical new laws to fight marginalization and racial inequity; and

WHEREAS, Nevada leaders, educators, and clergy advocate to embrace the unique and ancient Native American culture into the continued growth, prosperity, and beautification of our State, while recognizing and supporting the inherent sovereignty of these Tribal Nations; and

WHEREAS, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, I call upon all Nevadans to observe this month with special cultural celebrations, programing, and activities including visiting the one-of-a-kind Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2021, as

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH IN NEVADA
