WHEREAS, Nevada is proud to recognize the children and their relatives who raise them in kinship care, and who ensure their safety, promote their well-being and establish a stable household for these young people to thrive; and

WHEREAS, families are central to the well-being of our communities and often step forward out of love and loyalty to care for relatives when the child’s biological parents are not able to do so; and

WHEREAS, Nevadans join with kin residing in urban, rural and suburban households in every county of Nevada; and

WHEREAS, kinship care is a statewide resource that provides loving homes for vulnerable children in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, 40% of children in Nevada foster care are living in kinship care with grandparents, other relatives, or close family friends, often referred to as fictive kin; and

WHEREAS, kinship care enables a child to maintain family relationships and cultural heritage, and remain in their community;

WHEREAS, September is an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children, grandparents, other relatives, and fictive kin and continue to recognize and assist these caregivers who are giving selflessly of themselves to improve the life of the children they are raising

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2021, as

KINSHIP CARE MONTH IN NEVADA
