WHEREAS, bullying is defined as physical, verbal, sexual, or emotional harm or intimidation intentionally directed at a person or group of people; and

WHEREAS, thousands of Nevada's children and adolescents are affected by bullying annually; and

WHEREAS, bullying occurs in neighborhoods, playgrounds, schools, and online through technology; and

WHEREAS, children who witness bullying often feel less safe, helpless and intimidated by it;

WHEREAS, targets of bullying are at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, lower academic achievement, and dropping out of school and students who are repeatedly bullied often fear such activities as riding the bus, going to school, interacting online, and attending community activities; and

WHEREAS, children who bully are at greater risk of engaging in more serious violent behaviors; and

WHEREAS, Bullying Prevention Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about bullying, share messages of hope, and spread kindness throughout the Silver State;

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to the wellbeing, safety and scholastic achievement of all Nevada students and is committed to working to provide resources and support to guarantee the best possible future for our students;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2021, as

BULLYING PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
