WHEREAS, Greg Thornton served the State of Nevada with distinction and dedication for 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Greg began his career with the State at the Nevada Youth Training Center as a Group Supervisor II from May 6, 1991 through August 5, 1991; and

WHEREAS, Greg quickly became a Youth Training Center Counselor from August 5, 1991 through March 21, 2007 and Greg received his (LDAC) Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor in 1992 and when the position was re-classified as a Mental Health Counselor ll, Greg continued in this position through March 24, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Greg became a Mental Health Counselor 3 in 2014 and earned his certificate to supervise interns under his LADC certification and Greg supervised the Mental Health team at NYTC to provide a quality mental health program through February of 2016; and

WHEREAS, Greg fulfilled his destiny and was promoted in February of 2016 to Superintendent of the Nevada Youth Training Center, and Greg has provided leadership, advocacy for his staff and the youth, and maintained his commitment in that role for the remainder of his career; and

WHEREAS, Greg served over 5,700 youth within our State and with data gathered several years ago, we know that 3 out of 4 youth served in our system did NOT end up in the adult system within 5 years; and

WHEREAS, Greg has saved approximately 4,275 young men who have attended NYTC, from ending up in adult prisons; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada thanks Greg Thornton for his leadership, devotion, public service and profound lasting impact on Nevada’s history, and offers him best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim May 12, 2021, as a day in honor of
