FRIDAY AT 11:30 AM: Governor Sisolak to speak with media after meeting with Nevada tribal leaders to discuss the Federal Boarding School Initiative

CARSON CITY, NV - December 02, 2021

This Friday, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak will meet with Nevada tribal leaders and elders at Stewart Indian School in Carson City to discuss the Federal Boarding School Initiative launched by the U.S. Department of the Interior earlier this year.

After the meeting, the Governor and tribal leaders will provide a briefing to members of the media.

On Sept. 30, 2021, the U.S. Department of the Interior, announced a new phase of the Federal Boarding School Initiative, a comprehensive review of the troubled legacy of federal boarding school policies. In this phase, Tribal governments will be providing feedback on key issues to the Department of the Interior.

The Stewart Indian School, a federally run boarding school for Native American children in Carson City, was in operation from 1890 to 1980. Thousands of Native American children from more than 200 Tribes in Western states attended the school. The original mission was to forcefully assimilate Native children into American culture.
