Governor Sandoval Declared State of Emergency

In response to the ongoing Caughlin Fire, Governor Brian Sandoval has declared a state emergency which qualifies local governments for federal assistance associated with the fire.  Additionally this morning, Nevada was approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG). As a result, Nevada is eligible for up to 75% funding assistance for eligible costs.  The request was made by the Nevada Division of Forestry on behalf of the City of Reno at the onset of the fire this morning.

Below is an update from various departments throughout the state.  Residents are urged to remain on alert, stay informed and should stay out of the area if at all possible.  Residents in non-affected areas should stay informed and review their family evacuation plan, ensuring they have all necessary supplies.

Nevadans wishing to make financial contributions are encouraged to do so through the Red Cross in Northern Nevada.

Nevada Division of Forestry:

 

NDF is prepared to have helicopters in the air to fight the fire when winds dip below 25 miles an hour.

National Guard:

 

Prepared to launch the firing fighting helicopters as soon as the winds are within limits.

 

Working with the Reno Police Department on the evacuation of 9,000 plus citizens in the area.

 

Provided air guard fire truck to work with the Reno Fire department.

Department of Public Safety:

 

Provided troopers to assist in evacuating residents.

 

Toopers from Reno, Elko and Winnemucca responded.

Division of Emergency Management:

 

Provided staff to Emergency Operations Center, including the Chief of Nevada's Emergency Mangement Department.

Division of Insurance:

 

The Division of Insurance (DOI) Property & Casualty Section has contacted Washoe County and the State Emergency Operations Center to inform them Division staff is ready to provide any assistance needed, including deploying staff to a field office.

 

DOI Property & Casualty Section has sent out an urgent email to all P&C carriers in Nevada advising them of the Governor's Declaration, and requesting that the carriers advise the Division of their actions and response to the disaster.

 

DOI Consumer Services Staff in Las Vegas and Carson City have been mobilized to respond to calls about the fire.

 

DOI is providing assistance to consumers who are trying to get contact information for their agents and/or brokers.

The DOI has reached out to the Nevada Independent Insurance Agents Association and asked them to notify their agents of the fire and the Division's response.
