WHEREAS, World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988 and each year organizations and individuals across the world bring attention to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic, endeavor to increase HIV awareness and knowledge and speak out against HIV stigma; and

WHEREAS, in 2018, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health reported more than 12,000 people living with HIV throughout the State of Nevada, including more than 500 new HIV diagnoses with 196 of those diagnoses being Stage 3 (AIDS) diagnoses; and

WHEREAS, to combat this epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration provide guidance for collaboration of communities and organizations statewide, and in Nevada we look to the ‘Nevada Integrated HIV Prevention and Care Plan’ in reducing the number of AIDS-related deaths, reducing new HIV infection, and providing quality care for people living with HIV; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada recognizes and remembers those lives lost to AIDS-related illness and will continue to address HIV and AIDS as a public health concern;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the day of December 1, 2019, as

WORLD AIDS DAY
