WHEREAS, the citizens of Nevada recognize the vital role that swimming and aquatic-related activities play in good physical and mental health; and

WHEREAS, Nevadans understand the essential role that education regarding water safety plays in preventing drownings and recreational water-related injuries; and

WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control, ten people die from unintentional drownings every day, and an estimated one in five people who die from drowning are children age 14 and younger; and

WHEREAS, Nevada’s recreational water industry contributes to our communities by developing safe swimming facilities, home pools, aquatic programs, and activities which provide healthy places to learn and build self-esteem, contributing to the quality of life for our citizens; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada commends the ongoing efforts and commitment of pool, spa, waterpark, recreation and park industries to educating the public on pool and spa safety issues and initiatives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim May 2019 as

WATER SAFETY MONTH IN NEVADA
