WHEREAS, teen pregnancies have a significant impact on the health, education and economic future of Nevada’s young people; and

WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nevada continues to see reductions in teen birth rates along with the rest of the nation; and

WHEREAS, teen birth rates for Nevada residents declined from 48.7 percent in 2008 to 19.4 percent in 2017, and in the United States a total of 194,377 babies were born to women aged 15–19; and

WHEREAS, young people are less likely to get pregnant if they have supportive parents and caregivers, open communication with adults about contraception, and accurate knowledge about sexual health, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and the option of abstinence; and

WHEREAS, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month is an opportunity for parents, teens, educators, health care professionals, public health agencies, program providers, youth-serving organizations, and statewide policy makers to work together to reduce and prevent teen pregnancy in the Silver State;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim May 2019 as

TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION MONTH IN NEVADA
