Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, an estimated 70 million Americans have criminal records, while nearly 14,000 individuals are currently incarcerated in our state prison system and 6,765 individuals are on parole; and

WHEREAS, individuals with a criminal history often struggle to find affordable housing, employment, and education; and

WHEREAS, redemption and second chances are important American values; and

WHEREAS, individuals returning to society from prison face stigma, also known as collateral consequences and they often struggle to pay for debt that has accumulated from their incarceration; and

WHEREAS, Second Chance Month raises awareness of the need to obtain closure for those who have served their debt to society, and offers the opportunity for individuals, employers, congregations, and communities to extend a second chance;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim April 2019 as

SECOND CHANCE MONTH IN NEVADA
