WHEREAS, on average, 650 people die each year in boating-related accidents in the United States, with 76 percent of these fatalities caused by drowning; and

WHEREAS, 81 percent of recreational boating deaths occurred on boats in which the operator did not receive boating safety instruction; and

WHEREAS, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives each year by drowning were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident; and

WHEREAS, it is essential that boating enthusiasts recognize the importance of taking certain precautions, such as wearing a life jacket and never operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada urges all residents and visitors of the Silver State to practice safe boating habits, wear life jackets, enjoy their time on the water responsibly, and support the goals of the National Safe Boating Campaign;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of May 18-24, 2019 as

SAFE BOATING WEEK IN NEVADA
