WHEREAS, chronic pain is a major public health problem nationwide and it is one of the most cited reasons Americans seek medical care; and

WHEREAS, the Institute of Medicine has found that 100 million Americans live with chronic pain as a result of serious illness or injury; and

WHEREAS, chronic pain costs the nation an estimated $600 billion annually in medical expenses, lost wages and lost productivity; and

WHEREAS, chronic pain negatively impacts individual quality of life and the ability to actively participate in meaningful activities, such as working, socializing, and engaging in recreational activities as well as adversely impacting families and caregivers of chronic pain sufferers; and

WHEREAS, individuals with chronic pain are offered the opportunity to engage in the decision-making process of developing their treatment plan and are afforded options for their care to include safe and effective treatments, with the goal of enhancing quality of life; and

WHEREAS, increased awareness of the effects of chronic pain result in better outcomes, increased access to high-quality pain care, empowerment and validation for those living with chronic pain, and decreased stigma for those seeking compassionate care for their pain conditions;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim September 2019 as

PAIN AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
