WHEREAS, Osteoporosis is a serious bone-thinning disease that occurs when the body loses more bone mass than it replaces; and

WHEREAS, prevention must begin during the critical bone-building years of childhood and adolescence by eating a calcium-rich diet and by pursuing a healthy, active lifestyle; and

WHEREAS, Osteoporosis is a public health threat for an estimated 54 million Americans, or 50 percent of people 50 years of age and older, and 10 million individuals in the U.S. are estimated to already have the disease, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation; and

WHEREAS, there is a common misconception among Americans that Osteoporosis is a disease that only happens to elderly people, but currently there is no known cure and therapies are limited once a bone has fractured, putting any person at potential risk;

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada encourages both men and woman to fight osteoporosis by staying active, knowing their risks, and understanding the treatment options that help prevent fractures;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of May 12-18, 2019 as

OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION AND AWARENESS WEEK IN NEVADA
