WHEREAS, Nevada Infant Immunization Week provides an opportunity to promote the importance of immunizing children for protection against 14 vaccine-preventable diseases by the age of two; and

WHEREAS, it is important to vaccinate children on time, according to the childhood immunization schedule, to provide the best protection early in life, when babies are vulnerable and before they are likely to be exposed to disease; and

WHEREAS, vaccines are among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available for preventing disease and death, and help protect entire communities by preventing and reducing the spread of infectious diseases; and

WHEREAS, when people are unvaccinated, outbreaks of disease like pertussis (whooping cough) and measles can, and do return; and

WHEREAS, through the dedication of the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Immunize Nevada, and numerous community partners, Nevada’s toddler immunization rates are at 71.3%, placing us above the U.S. National average and 21st in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada encourages parents, caregivers, health care professionals, businesses, government agencies, and community-based organizations to participate in events to increase the awareness of the importance of immunizing children before their second birthday;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim April 27-May 4, 2019 as

NEVADA INFANT IMMUNIZATION WEEK
