Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, native tribes have resided in our state for more than 9,000 years, and as the first people to prosper in what is now Nevada, the Numu, Newe, and WaSheShu have helped shape our state’s history; and

WHEREAS, the Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe people have made many important contributions to the uniqueness of our state with an ancient culture of language, music, dance and story-telling; and

WHEREAS, native tribes played an integral role in Nevada becoming a state, providing the necessary population count needed for the territory to apply for statehood; and

WHEREAS, Nevada’s Stewart Indian School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a present-day monument to the experiences of countless Native Americans in Nevada and across the Western United States; and

WHEREAS, we recognize Nevada’s 27 Tribes, Bands and Colonies as the first stewards of our hills, sage, pine and Truckee River, while building on the advancements made possible through collaboration to ensure a vibrant and resilient Nevada/Indian Country filled with possibility; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to celebrating the contributions of tribal communities, preserving and sharing their stories and traditions, and acknowledging the important role they have played throughout Nevada’s history; and

WHEREAS, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, we call upon all Nevadans to explore the educational and cultural offerings of Nevada Tribes, not just in November, but all year long;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim November 2019 as

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH IN NEVADA
