WHEREAS, National Police Week is observed throughout the nation to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy; and

WHEREAS, 2019 marks the 22nd anniversary of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which was dedicated to honor the memory of law enforcement officers who died in the service of the State; and

WHEREAS, the dedicated men and women who work as law enforcement officers face great risk and danger while preserving the freedom, safety, and security of others; and

WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers currently serving in communities across the United States, including 11,000 active law enforcement officers in the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, since 1861, 134 Nevada law enforcement officers have given their lives in the line of duty, including Las Vegas Department of Public Safety Correctional Officer Kyle L. Eng, who suffered a fatal heart attack on July 19, 2018, shortly after struggling with an inmate at the Las Vegas Detention Center, and National Park Service Ranger James P. Fleetwood, who died when his vehicle was struck head-on by a drunk driver on July 5, 1977; and

WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the Nevada Capitol Grounds and honored annually; and

WHEREAS, during National Police Week, all Nevadans are encouraged to remember the thousands of law enforcement officers who have lost their lives while protecting their communities and express their appreciation to Nevada’s active and retired law enforcement officers;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim May 2, 2019 as

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY IN NEVADA
