WHEREAS, protecting our communities and promoting public safety is one of my top priorities; and

WHEREAS, every day, 100 Americans are killed by gun violence and countless others are wounded; and

WHEREAS, June 2019 would have marked the 22nd birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who was tragically shot and killed while standing with friends at a local park in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Gun Violence Awareness Day helps us honor Hadiya, and the Americans whose lives are cut short by gun violence every day; and

WHEREAS, by wearing orange and commemorating Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 7, 2019, Nevadans will raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives and lost human potential of Nevadans stolen by gun violence; and

WHEREAS, this idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya’s friends, who asked their classmates to commemorate her life by wearing orange, choosing this color because hunters wear orange to protect themselves and others, and orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada renews its commitment to reducing gun violence and encouraging responsible gun ownership to help keep our children and communities safe;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim June 7, 2019, as
