
WHEREAS, flooding can create imminent threat to life and property, as well as the potential for hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to homes, businesses, and local government infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, since 1955, Nevada has received 18 presidential disaster declarations for flooding, which in 2017 included: Douglas, Elko, Humboldt, Lyon, Storey, and Washoe counties; the independent city of Carson City, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, South Fork Band of Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone, and Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California; and
WHEREAS, by taking actions to prepare for floods, Nevadans are able to reduce their risk which will help make communities safer and more damage resistant; and
WHEREAS, the multi-entity Nevada Flood Awareness Committee was formed to raise awareness, and this week provides an opportunity to educate the public about floods, flood awareness, and flood insurance;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of November 16 - 22, 2019 as
FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK IN NEVADA
