WHEREAS, house fires in the United States resulted in 2,630 civilian deaths, and fire departments responded to 357,000 home fires in 2017, according to the National Fire Protection Association; and

WHEREAS, all Nevadans are encouraged to create a map of their home, marking two exits from each room and a path to a safe location from each exit; and

WHEREAS, home fire drills should be practiced twice a year, both during the day and at night, to allow everyone to practice using different pre-designated exits; and

WHEREAS, Nevada’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and

WHEREAS, home addresses should be clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find, and when leaving the home, all doors should be closed as you leave to slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire; and

WHEREAS, once you get out of a burning building, stay outside; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, the national 2019 Fire Prevention Week theme ‘Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!,’ reminds all Nevadans that personal steps must be taken to increase our safety from fire;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of October 6 - 12, 2019 as

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK IN NEVADA
